Parts & Tools You'll Need
- White Lithium Grease Spray
- Hammer & 8d Nail or Hinge Pin Punch
- Old Rag
Step-by-Step Manual
- Check the screws first Open the door and make sure every hinge screw is fully tight — a loose hinge plate can cause a squeak or a slight door sag that's often mistaken for a dry hinge.
- Tap out the hinge pin Place a nail or hinge pin punch under the head of the hinge pin and tap upward with a hammer until the pin loosens, then pull it out by hand.
- Wipe down the pin Wipe off old dirt and dried grease from the pin with a rag.
- Apply lubricant to the pin and hinge barrel Spray white lithium grease onto the pin and into the hinge barrel (or dab on petroleum jelly if that's what's on hand).
- Reinsert the pin and work the door Slide the pin back into the hinge and tap it fully seated with the hammer. Open and close the door several times to work the lubricant through the hinge.
- Repeat on remaining hinges if needed If the squeak persists, repeat the process on the door's other hinges — often more than one hinge is dry.
