- Stud Finder
Step-by-Step Manual
- Find and mark the squeak Walk slowly over the floor and have someone listen (or listen yourself) for the exact squeaky spot. Mark it with painter's tape.
- Locate the joist below Use a stud finder (or check the basement/crawlspace below if accessible) to find the floor joist nearest the squeak — screws need to bite into the joist, not just the subfloor.
- Set up the break-away screw kit Place the kit's depth-control fixture over the squeak location, positioned over the joist line, following the kit's instructions.
- Drive the screw through the fixture Drive the break-away screw through the fixture, through the flooring, and into the joist below. The screw head will snap off automatically once it reaches the correct depth.
- Test the spot Remove the fixture and walk over the repaired area to confirm the squeak is gone.
- Fill the holes Press a matching wood filler stick into each small screw hole and wipe away the excess so the repair blends in.
