Step-by-Step Manual
- Measure the hatch or door Measure the attic access panel or pull-down door precisely — width and height — to size your foam board insulation.
- Cut the foam board to size Using a utility knife and straightedge, cut the rigid foam board to match the hatch dimensions exactly.
- Attach the foam board to the attic side Glue or staple the foam board to the attic-facing side of the hatch or door so it doesn't interfere with opening it from below.
- Apply weatherstripping to the frame Clean the perimeter of the opening where the hatch sits, then press self-adhesive foam weatherstripping around the full frame.
- Install a compression latch Mount a hook-and-eye latch so that closing it pulls the hatch snugly against the new weatherstripping for a tight seal.
- Check the seal Close the hatch and check for daylight or drafts around the edges — adjust the weatherstripping thickness if you find gaps.
