How to Replace Damaged or Missing Asphalt Roof Shingles
Time required: 1-2 hours · Difficulty 3/5
Roof work has a serious fall risk. Only attempt this on a dry day, on a shallow, walkable pitch, using a roof harness anchored above the work area. If your roof is steep, wet, icy, or more than one story, hire a licensed roofer instead.

Step-by-Step Manual
- Set up fall protection Anchor and put on your roof harness before climbing. Work only in dry, calm conditions.
- Loosen the shingle above the damaged one Slide a flat pry bar under the shingle directly above the damaged one to break its sealant strip and access the nails beneath.
- Remove the damaged shingle's nails Pry out the exposed nails holding the damaged shingle, then slide the damaged shingle out from under the row above.
- Slide in the new shingle Slide the new shingle into the gap so its top edge tucks under the shingle row above and its bottom edge aligns flush with the row below.
- Nail it down Lift the shingle above and drive roofing nails through the new shingle at the standard nail line (usually 1 inch above each tab slot), then press the upper shingle back down over the nail heads.
- Seal the tabs Dab roofing cement under the corners of the shingle tabs and under the shingle above to reseal them against wind uplift.
